GARDEN C OMPETITION

RESULTS TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY It was reported at last night s meeting of the Timaru Horticultural Society that the results of the garden competition would be announced on the night of the summer show. Present—Messrs G. E. Knowles (chairman), D. B. Shand (president), Mesdaines W. S. Blaikie. T. Barker, I. Segar, W. J. Rooney, G. E. Knowles. Messrs L. B. Pearson, J. Cleland, F. E. Duncan. C. E. Graham, A. W. Anderson, J. Milligan, J. Moody. J. Stewart, W. J. Hogg and J. W. Hinchey. The chairman reported that Mr J. A. Tait, of Oamaru, had judged the garden competition, the results of which would be announced on the night of the show. There had been 18 entries. Mr Pearson expressed regret that the competition had not attracted more entries, although the B class this year had been quite satisfactory. Entries

were very slow in coming forward, and the sub-committee had considered that the donors of the cups might be approached with a view to allowing the I competition to lapse for a time until I more enthusiasm was aroused. The entry of 18 was better than was first expected. The chairman said he hoped that the sub-committee’s report would be the means of arousing more interest. Thanks were extended to the subcommittee for its work and to the presiden for providing transport for the judge during his inspection of the gardens.

The chairman said that the judge had been much impressed by the gardens. Acknowledgment of their appointment as judges for the forthcoming show were received from Mrs A. G. Pitts, Waimate (decorative), and Mr E. G. Page, Dunedin (cut flowers). Mr A. S. Jones was appointed judge of the fruit and vegetables. The following class stewards were appointed for the show: —Cut flowers. Messrs F. E. Duncan and L. B. Pearson; roses, Messrs J. Cleland and C. E. Graham; decorative section, Mr W J. Foote and lady members of the committee; fruit and vegetables. Mr R. B. Hart.

The chairman drew attention to the cup which had been given by Mr and Mrs W. J. Hogg for most points in vegetables during the season. lie hoped that the Cup and special prizes would stimulate more interest in that section this year.

Correspond nice was received from Mr G. S. Ridley, chief agricultural instructor for the Canterbury Education Board, regarding the judging of the Hurdley Shield school garden competition.

It was decided that this year no monetary prizes be awarded by the Society for the competition.
