AUSTRALIA WINS TASMAN CUP

Australia retained the Tasman Cup by defeating New Zealand by 3J points to 2). The conditions were ideal for the matches. Mrs Britten Jones and Mrs Negus woii the first two holes in their foursomes match, and were three up at the sixth hole. New Zealand won the next two to be one down at the turn. Both pairs went out in 42. Miss Horwell was not confident on the greens. The Australians won three holes in succession after the turn and halved the fourteenth. They won the next two for the match. The golf in the other match was below the standard expected. Miss Hutton and Mrs Fullerton-Smith played better than the other two. Little separated the teams, the lead seesawing. They were square at the ninth. The Australians were out in 43 and the New Zealanders in 44. New Zealand was one up at the tenth. The score was all square at the fourteenth and one up at the fifteenth, but Miss Kay lifted her head in playing the Second shot at the last hole, enabling Australia to square the match. Better Play in Singles The golf in the singles was better. Miss Kay always had the upper hand agaihst Mrs Clements, leading one up at the turn. She continued steadily to end the match at the fifteenth. Mrs Britten Jones was superior to Mrs Fullerton-Smith over the first 13 holes, at which stage she was four tip. Mrs Fullerton-Smith then unwound a burst of her best play, the next four holes yielding two pars and two Birdies to square the match. The Australian fluffed her second at the last, Mrs Fullerton-Smith taking the hole with five and the match. Always In the Lead The Australians always had the lead in the other matches. Mrs Hutton was two Up at the turn ahd Mrs McLeod was one up. Both Were one up in playing the fifteenth. Miss Hutton took the eighteenth. Miss Helean pulling her drive Into the tiger country. Miss McLeod and Miss Horwell were all square playing the last. The Australian was six feet from the pin with her second. Miss Horwell was short and she rah through and missed the return to lose the hole to four. Results:— Mrs Britten Jones and Mrs Negus 1 (Australia) beat Miss Jean Horwell and Miss Fleming (New Zealand), 5 up and 4 to play. Mrs Clements and Miss Hutton (Australia) drew with Miss Oliver Kay ahd Mrs Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand), all square. Miss Kay beat Mrs Clements, 4 and 3. Mrs Fullerton-Smith beat Mrs Britten Jones, 1 up. ■ Miss P. Helean lost to Miss Hutton, 2 down. | Miss Jean Horwell lost to Miss McI Leod, 1 down. SURPRISE DEFEAT OF FERRIER VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIP United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright (Received September 3, 7.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE. September 3. The surprise of the third round of the Victorian amateur golf championship to-day was the comparatively easy defeat of Jim Ffefrifef by the present title-holder, H. L. Williams. 4 up and 3 to play. Ferrier did not win a hole until the eleventh, and his only other win was at the fourteenth. The pair had hitherto met four titties in five years, Williams winning on each occasion. Williams is a left hander and like Feirler a very long driver. The pair ate each 6ft 2ih in height and each 21 years of age, but Ferrier weighs 14st 51b, neatly 3st heavier than Williams. Other results were: Ryan beat Fisher 7 and 5. Nettlefold beat Russell 2 and 1. Other winners were: S. Dalrymple, L. Hardie, A. Rae, A. Jackson, F. Gluth.
