DAVIS CUP TEAMS

REPRESENTATION OF DOMINION MONEY BEING WASTED Money spent in sending men lik Andrews, Malfroy and Stedman t represent New Zealand in the Dav: Cup matches is just so much mone wasted, according to Mr G. F, Smyth a prominent Timaru tennis playe who returned recently from a visit t England. Mr Smythe told a reports of “The Timaru Herald” yesterda that, in his opinion, New ' Zealan should send men who would return t the Dominion and give players her the benefit of their internations match-play experience. He had bee present at the Wimbledon tournamei and had seen Malfroy and Stedma outclassed by Hughes and Tuckey, an also had seen Perry at the top of h form when he defeated Von Cramm. Tennis was very popular in Englan and there were always large attend ances at the Wimbledon toumameni When he was coming away from th courts at 8 o'clock one evening at th conclusion of the day’s play, a queu was already being formed for the nex day. Unemployed usually held posi tions in the queue and sold them late in the day. The gates were not opene until noon and play began at 2 o’clock It was possible to hire stools whil waiting in the queue, and there wer always a number of entertainers pre sent so that the time passed quicklj On one occasion. Mr Smythe joined th queue at 8 o'clock in the morning, bu even then there were many hundred of people there before him. “There would be an outcry in Net Zealand if the people had to pay 10/8/- and 5/- to see a tennis match but in England the people pay am think nothing of it. Those are th charges made for the centre court, bu many games which are equally as goo< can be seen on No. 1 court, where th admission charge is only 3/-,” said M Smythe. He added that he had beei greatly impressed by the beautifi appointments at Wimbledon, especi ally interesting being an electric score which showed the state of the mate] all through the game. The centr court was taken great care of, as wa shown by the fact that the American and Germans were not allowed to pla: their Davis Cup matches there as i was being kept for the finals. “Evei at Wimbledon the umpires and lines men make mistakes,” remarked M Smythe.
