WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

GROUP MEETING At a meeting of the executive of the Waimate Group of Institutes, Mrs P. Grant presided and was accorded a vote of thanks for kindly presenting prizes for the competition at the last group meeting. It was decided that the Federation meeting, which is to be held in Waimate next October, should take the place of the usual spring group meeting. Arrangements were made and a date chosen for the judging of the choir competition. Members were encouraged to plant a tree commemorating the King’s Silver Jubilee. WAIHAORUNGA. The May meeting of the Waihaorunga Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Hurst, Mrs Swainson being in the chair. Business was cut short in order to welcome members of the Waihao Downs Institute, who demonstrated wool embroidery. The demonstration was ably presented by Mrs Millar, aided by Mrs Allen. Mrs Preece, president of Waihao Downs Institute, expressed pleasure at visiting Waihaorunga, and exhibited some very fine wool tapestry work. The winners of the competitions were.— Plain apron: Mrs Swainson 1, Mrs Hurst and Miss M. Hurst (equal) 2. Specimen bloom: Mrs Hurst 1, Mesdames A. and W. Armstrong (equal) 2. RANGITIRA VALLEY. The monthly meeting of the Rangatira Valley Women’s Institute was held at “Bluegum Park” the residence of the president, a fair number of members being present. Arrangements were made for the forthcoming birthday party. The president (Mrs G. A. Davey) welcomed visitors from Pleasant Point after which Miss Kime (Pleasant Point) gave a very interesting and instructive demonstration of brass work and was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions for the day resultings: Miss Stewart (a beret) 1, Mrs Kennedy (hot water bag-cover) 2. Best bottle of tomato sauce: Mrs W. Lyon 1, Mrs Kennedy 2. Premier bloom competition: Mrs Talbot (chrysanthemum) 1, Mrs Geo. «McCullough (dahlia) 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mrs R. Talbot and the Misses Goodwins.
