SWIMMING

A NEW r RECORD By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, May 12. In a special attempt on his own New Zealand junior boys’ 75 yards breaststroke record at the Otago Swimming Centre’s jubilee carnival on Saturday night, Geoff Chalmers, holder of the national junior boys’ breaststroke championship, covered the distance in 58 seconds, lowering the record by 1 1-5 seconds. Walter Jarvis attempted to lower the 100 metres backstroke record, but was unsuccessful, his time being 73 4-5 seconds, 2-ssec outside the record. It was a good performance as Jarvis has never concentrated on this style to any extent.
