NO REDRESS
ERROR BY GOVERNMENT By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, May 2. “If it had been a private firm it would have been responsible, but because it is a Government department the Government will not accept responsibility,” said a member of the Chamber of Commerce Council, when the Council was discussing the effects of an error made in the transmission of a cable. An Auckland fruit firm sent a cablegram to its agents in Rarotonga in code, but owing to mutilation in transmission, the words “will pay market rate 7/8" appeared in the message as received by the agent. The consequence was that the price of bananas was forced up by 2/- per case in the fruit shipped. The firm said the department had no intention of recompensing it in any way, for its financial loss. The Chief Postmaster had expressed regret, and said suitable action was being taken with the officer who was at fault. A refund of transmission charges had been authorised, but the department was absolved by law from claims arising out of errors. Members of the Chamber agreed that the only remedy the firm had was to petition the Minister, and failing that ventilate the m Iter in Parliament. It was a serious matter for a firm to lose several hundred of pounds through such an error.
