WAGES DISPUTE
SAWMILL WORKERS By Telegraph—Press Association TAUMARUNUI, May 2. A Conciliation Council sat to-day to consider three disputes under the Conciliation Act regarding wages in the Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki districts and fix the terms and conditions of employment of workers in country sawmills. Mr P. Hally presided. The employers offered a minimum wage of 1/6 on which the whole discussion centred. The advocate for the workers suggested 1/8 as a minimum. The employers considered that they could not do this with safety to the industry, as they considered that the present improvement was due to the unemployment building subsidy. The workers eventually offered to accept a minimum wage of 1/7 provided a revision was made of the whole schedule of wages in the same proportion. The employers refused to accept this and the workers’ advocate stood firmly against 1/6 as a minimum. The Council adjourned for 28 days to allow the parties further to consider the matter and call another meeting if there was a likelihood of agreement.
