SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH WIN FOR TIMARU The annual cricket match between the first eleven’s of Waitaki and Timaru Boys’ High Schools which was commenced at the Rectory on Thursday concluded yesterday morning, Timaru winning with eight wickets in hand. Waitaki batted first and compiled 89 runs, to which Timaru replied with . 168. At the close of play on Thursday, Waitaki had made 137 for nine wickets in their second innings and the remaining wicket fell a few minutes after the resumption of play yesterday, the side being out for 142 runs. This left Timaru 64 runs to make to win and they knocked them up for the loss of two wickets in less than an hour. H. E. Wilson (10) and A. E. Dinnie (0) the not out men resumed, Wilson facing Earwaker from the northern end. Wilson snicked the first delivery through the slips for a single and Dinnie despatched the fifth ball to the leg boundary, bringing the total to 141. Blue came on from the southern end and Dinnie got his first delivery away for a single. The next ball, however, Wilson lifted into Baillie’s hands at silly mid-on and Waitaki were ail out for 142, after four minutes play on the second day.

Requiring 64 runs to win Timaru began their second innings at 10.16, Earwaker and McLeod opening. Pacing Wilson, Earwaker gave a chance off the fourth ball of the first over, but it was not taken and the batsmen ran 3. Gowland took up the attack from the northern end and Earwaker banged him to the leg boundary. He notched a single off Wilson’s next over and when a leg bye off Gowland went to the boundary 10 runs were telegraphed after 10 minutes play. McLeod opened his account with a neat cut past third man which went to the boundary, but both batsmen slowed up temporarily, Gowland and Wilson each sending down a maiden. Gowland bowled another maiden and Timaru’s '’’•st wicket fell when Baillie played the fourth ball of Wilson’s next over on to his wicket, 18-1-4. McDonald was the new man, and he opened brightly by getting the last ball of the over away to the leg boundary. Earwaker scored a single off Gowland but McDonald played back to a well pitched ball a minute later and was skittled. 23-2-4. Blue joined Earwaker and the pair ran some smart singles. The board showed 30 runs in 35 minutes when Blue got Gowland away to the off boundary and Earwaker lifted Wilson over square-leg’s head for four off the first ball of the next over. A single to Earwaker brought 40 up in quick time, and off successive deliveries from Gowland Blue scored three boundaries, 50 appearing on the board. The over yielded 13 runs. Gowland made a change in the attack, bringing Tilbury on at the, southern end, but both batsmen played him confidently, 60 being telegraphed after 45 minutes play. Capstick came on at the northern end and the required number of runs was obtained when Earwaker sent him away to the off boundary, the match finishing at 11.2. Blue played a forceful innings for 33 compiled in quick time, and Earwaker’s partnership with him also was fruitful. B. Ritchie was not- available for the match. Scores were:—

WAITAKI JUNIORS WIN Waitaki juniors succeeded in defeating Timaru by six wickets, securing the necessary runs right on the call of time. On the first day, Timaru in their first innings made 211, and at stumps Waitaki had lost one wicket for 51 runs. Waitaki continued their innings yesterday morning, and gradually got within sight of the Timaru total. Nine wickets were down for 202, ten runs being required to place them in the lead when the last man went in. When one run short of their objective, however, Laney was bowled by Grant. Timaru did not fare so well in their second effort, being dismissed for 127 runs. Lawry was dismissed when only three runs had been scored, but Grant and Lovelock made a stand, taking the total to 45 before Grant was bowled by Laney. Burnett remained at the wickets some time without opening his account, and he was there when Lovelock, who had made 35, was taken by Walton off Laney. Burnett next went l.b.w. to Rees-Jones. Waddell and Milligan got going, however, and they took the score to 101 when Waddell was bowled by Rees-Jones. Thomson failed to score, and Heasley added one to the score. Lawrence joined Milligan, who was dismissed without addition to the score. His 33 included five boundaries. Lawrence was the only other batsman to reach double figures, being unbeaten with 10 to his credit. Waitaki were left with 129 to get to win, and they set out after the runs in business-like fashion. They lost Wheeler when only four runs had been scored, but Foster and Dick put on 48. Walton went cheaply, but Dick and Sinclair provided a bright partnership, the latter having 32 to his credit when fcs was bowled by Grant. Rees-Jones and Dick secured the remaining *uns necessary for a win right on time. Scores: —
