POLICE FAREWELL

SERGEANT HODGSON DEPARTS Sergeant J. R. Hodgson, who left yesterday to take charge of the Frankton Police Station was farewelled by members of the Timaru staff before his departure. The function was presided over by Inspector L. E. O’Halloran.. The Inspector said that the reason why some of the members of the Force had gathered that afternoon was to give Sergeant Hodgson a genuine sendoff. He thought that Frankton Station was made to order for him and thought he would be very happy there. It was largely due to Mrs Hodgson’s interest that the transfer was affected and the Commisioner was to be thanked for his consideration. Some transfers were for the good of the town or the Force, but the Sergeant was being transferred for his own good. The speaker trusted that he would enjoy mar -/ years there and trusted that Mrs Hodgson, Miss Hodgson and the Sergeant would be perfectly happy in their new home. “I have always found you a straight man and never known you to do a crooked thing,” remarked the Inspector, in handing Sergeant Hodgson a set of carvers on behalf of the men present. These remarks were endorsed by Senior-Sergeant D. J. Hewitt, and Constable. A. H. Abbott, who apologised for the absence of Constable King, assured the guest of honour that all present were very cere in their expressions of good will. Other speakers were the District Clerk, Constables A. Munro, S. J. Anderson, F. O’Halloran nnd W. J. Headley.

In reply Sergeant Hodgson said he would appreciate very deeply the kind remarks and th' handsome present, which would remind him of his pleasant associations with comrades in Timaru. He hoped that things v.ould progress smoothly in future. He had always done what he thought to be right and if that spirit was carried out it would always make for happy relations between the men.
