TEMUKA

THE FOOTBALL CLUB’S YEAR MEMBERS MEET The Temuka Football Club held its ! annual meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr T. Dwan presiding over an attendance of 60 members. The president referred to the death of Mr J. Collogan, a former member of the Club, and a vote of sympathy with the relatives was passed. Annual Report The annual report stated that owing to a decrease in attendances at games and the fact that 10 per cent, of the gate-takings had to be paid to the Rugby Union, the finances of the club were in a low position. The senior team had played bright football when once at full strength, and had won the Harris Cup in the knock-out competition, and the Collogan Cup in the annual game with Waihi. The following seniors had gained representative honours: A. Stewart, W. Duke, L. Goodscn, D. Hopkinson, E. Ryan, and M. O’Connor. The junior team had had to withdraw from the competition owing to lack of support, but the third grade side had won the Dwan Cup. the championship cup in their grade, for the first time, as well as the Timaru, Geraldine and Pleasant Point tournaments. In that connection thanks were due to Mr J. M. Ritchie, who had taken such a keen interest in the team’s welfare. The fourth grade team nad played well, but had lacked a coach, and in the fifth grade difficulty was found in keeping a full team in the field, although the available players were keen and showed promise. The seniors had played a return game with Fairlie early in the season and the fourth grade had visited Rangiora for the annual game. It was with regret that the club had to record the death of Mr J. Collogan, the donor of the Collogan Cup. Toward the end of the season the club’s delegate on the Rugby Union management committee (Mr L. Connolly) had left for the North Island and a complimentary dinner had been tendered to him. The generosity of Messrs M. M. Coffey and W. J. Quirke in providing complimentary dinners after the winning of the Harris and Collogan Cups respectively had been much appreciated, and the thanks of the club were due to a number of supporters who had lent their cars for the transport of players.

The balance-sheet showed that receipts for the year totalled £IOB 3s, and expenditure £lO3 4s 6d. there being a debit bank balance of £1 11s Id, and a credit in the Post Office of £l6 16s 3d. The adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet was then moved by the president, and seconded by Mr C. R. Cooper. During the discussion a member asked how it was that two vice-presidents’ subscriptions had been paid into the bank and the rest into the Post Office.

The president explained that the first two subscriptions had been receipted before the club procured a special receipt book. The remainder had been paid into the Post Office to avoid the Rugby Union’s percentage being deducted. Since the last annual meeting there had been a conference of country clubs to discuss what should be done in connection with the Union’s proposal to deduct a percentage from the country clubs’ receipts. He and the Temuka delegates had held out for a percentage of not more than 10 per cent., but had been over-ruled by the others, it being eventually agreed that the payments be made on a sliding scale proDortionate to the amount collected. This was detrimental to the Temuka Club’s interest. In that connection it was interesting to note that Temuka had been a prominent contributor to the payment from the South Canterbury Union to the New Zealand Union. The sum of £6B had been paid by South Canterbury, out of that county clubs had paid £2l Is 4d and the Temuka Club £ls 16s sd. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted. Election of Officers

Officers elected for the year were:— Patroness, Mrs F. Beri; patron, Dr. F. A. Scannell; president. Mr T. Dwan; treasurer, Mr T. E. Shiels; secretary, Mr J. Denison; auditor, Mr B. Hughes; delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs W. Harte and L. W. Parrant; delegate to the Domain Board. Mr Dwan; committee. Messrs G. Washington, M. M. Coffey, R. A. Lyall. W. McCully. S. Higinbottom. A. Gaffaney, and W. D. McCallum; club captain, Mr J. D. Airay. Before vacating the chair Mr Dwan thanked the club and committee for its support and said that he had had a most enjoyable year of office. (Applause.) During the election of officers the secretary said he would not accept reelection unless the salary was increased. Since his appointment the secretary’s work had become much more difficult through the requirements of the auditor and president, and was worth more than the amount now paid. An increase to £lO a year was granted. The secretary said he thought that it would be more advisable for the club to have a senior and a junior vicepresident. instead of a great number who merely gave donations. He moved a motion along those lines. An amendment that last year’s vicepresidents be re-elected, and one appointed senior from among them by the committee, was moved by Mr C. C. Stanley and carried. The resignation of Mr J. Scott from

the position of senior coach was received.

The president said it gave him much regret to receive the resignation. Mr Scott had put a great deal of time and expense into the coaching of the team for some years. On many nights he had cycled down from Winchester to find only four or five players present. The club had material as good or better than any in the province, but it had not tried to train or show any interest in the team’s welfare. He thought that a record of appreciation of Mr Scott’s services should be placed in the minutes.

It was agreed that the resignation be accepted with regret and that an appreciation be recorded. The following coaches were then appointed: Senior, Mr L. W. Parrant; junior, left in abeyance; third grade, Mr J. M. Ritchie; fourth grade, Mr J. Denison; fifth grade, Mr G. Washington.

New members elected were: Messrs R. Jamieson, R. Burns, C. L. Beatson and G. Collins.

Subscriptions were reduced by 1/- in all grades for players only this resulting: Senior 4/-, junior 2/6, third grade 1/6, fourth grade 1/-. With regard to the Pleasant Point Club’s remit that vice-president’s be included as ex-officio members of the management committee, it was left with the club’s delegates to use their discretion.

It was decided to support the Zingari Club’s remit that the findings of the permit committee be referred to the management committee before taking effect. Mr Stanley asked what the club’s attitude to the imposition of the tax on gate receipts would be. The president said that if last year’s sliding scale were imposed in the coming year it would not be worth while the club trying to carry on. It would not be known what the Union’s intention would be until after its annual meeting.

It was decided to open the season on April 6 and to invite Fairlie to play the seniors at Temuka on April 13, while a game could be returned to Albury at Albury on the following Saturday.

Mesdames F. Beri and C. J. Taylor and Messrs J. Scott, A. Washington and G. W. Armitage were elected life members of the club in recognition of their services.

Mr Parrant was appointed senior grade selector. The delegates to the Rugby Union were instructed to oppose any higher levy than 10 per cent, being placed on gate receipts. SWIMMING SPORTS Creditable performances were accomplished by the children of the Temuka Distict High School at the annual swimming sports yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Buzan, after referring to improved conditions in thecontrol and supervision of the baths, congratulated the children on the excellent standard of sport. He urged that every parent should encourage his children to learn to swim, for not only was the sport an excellent exercise, but also it was the possible means of saving life. He had pleasure in declaring the carnival open. Mr A. E. Smith, chairman of the School Committee, thanked parents and adults for their attendance and interest. It was pleasing for the staff and committee to note the increasing interest on the part of the parents. He advised the children to take heed of. the Mayor’s words wherein he suggested that everyone should aim to be proficient in swimming. Results:—• Primary Department Learners’ Width, girls: J.
