DOMINION AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS AUCKLAND WINS SHIELD By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI, March 9. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships were completed to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance of the public. Two New Zealand records were broken, W. G. Bainbridge, of Auckland, covering 220 yards in 21 3-ssec, clipping two thirds of a second off the circular track record, and F. A. Finlayson, of Auckland, taking 55 3-ssec for the 440 yards hurdles, which was one-fifth of a second better than the record established last year by A, T, Anderson, of Canterbury. The points for the championship shield were:— Points. Auckland 40 Wellington 29 Hawkes Bay Hawkes 8.-Poverty B. .. 26 Canterbury .. 20 West Coast, North Is 16 Otago 9 Auckland also won the Queensland Memorial Shield with 21 points, Canterbury being runners up with 9. Evans gained on the last corner and held his own to the finish, winning by about four yards. Symes (H.8.P.8.) .... 2 Miss K. Callinan (C) 3 Miss Gudsell sprinted up to a good finish, winning by about a yard. Time —ll 3-ssec. High Jump Championship T. J. Crowe (W), sft llin.. .. 1 P. J. Hackett (A) sft lOin .... 2 A. Cameron (O) sft sin 3 One Mile Walk Championship T. Driscoll (H.8.P.8.) 1 B. Campbell (W.C.N.1.) 2 Coleman reached the finishing post six yards ahead of Driscoll, but was disqualified by a majority of the judges.

Darby stumbled on landing over the hurdle at half way which put him out of the running. Finlayson held an advantage over the last obstacle to come on and win nicely by two yards in New Zealand record time. Throwing the Hammer Championship M. R Spillane (C) 151 ft 7lin.. 1 A. D. After one break: they got away well. Evans was overhauled by Kerr at the half way mark, with Black commencing to move up and Bainbridge also handy. Black took the lead running to the turn, but Bainbridge was in front when they straightened up and finishing resolutely won by seven yards. Before they entered the final stages Cooper had lapped Weyman and came on to w'in by more than 70 yards from his team mate Atton, who nearly lapped Weyman. Mr L. A. Tracy, honorary secretary; What would you call a full period? Mr McKenzie: At least seven weeks. Mr R. O. Johnson (Otago) supported Mr Mackenzie and said that it was impossible for the New Zealand team to reach top form in two or three weeks after landing. If trials were to be held to select the team, they should bi fixed early in the season.
