BATSMEN SHOW FORM

SATURDAY’S MATCHES Beautiful weather prevailed on Saturday when a further series of matches in the South Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions was commenced. For the most part the wickets favoured the batsmen, and as a result some good scores were registered. Playing against Celtic at the Rectory, Old Boys put on 216 runs, and at stumps Celtic had 51 runs on the board without loss. Scoring was a little slower in the Timaru—Star game, which was played on Anzac Square. Timaru were dismissed for 190, and at stumps Star had lost two wickets for 29 runs. High School and Geraldine met at Geraldine, and at the end of the day's play, School we,re in a winning position. OLD BOYS v. CELTIC Old Boys won the toss and took first strike on a wicket which favoured the batsmen, Morrison and Lee opening against Williams and Hertnon. Morrison settled down at once to give a pretty display of batting, and scored with neatly placed shots all round the wicket. Lee was scratching for singles, but his defence was sound. After an hour’s play, 80 runs appeared on the board, Morrison having done most of the scoring. Williams was keeping an excellent length, and he succeeded in keeping the runs down. With the total at 106 the first wicket fell, Morrison going lbw.. to Williams after a splendid exhibition. He hit five fours and three threes. Sunley was the newcomer, but six runs later he skied one from Kane and was taken in the slips. Souter joined Lee, but did not last long, being well beaten by Williams. G. Davies went for the runs immediately, and pulled Kane to the on boundary for a nice six. In attempting a similar shot he mishit, and was taken by Harding with his total at 22. Lee was now playing good cricket, and reached 60 with a three past mid-off. With six down for 181, Lawson partnered Lee, who carried his total to 82 when he was stumped by Lang. His innings, which included six fours, was a patient but valuable one for the side. Lawson hit up 20 in short time, and then gave a catch to R. Mason, who had been giving a brilliant exhibition of fielding. S. Mason was then given a turn with the ball, and he dismissed the last two batsmen with consecutive deliveries, the innings closing at 5.30 for 216. Kane was the most successful bowler, taking five wickets for 76 runs in 19 overs.

S. Mason and G. Gifford were Celtic’s opening pair, Gifford getting Thompson’s third ball away to the leg boundary. Davies took the ball at the other end, a brace coming off the second delivery. After Thompson had sent down four overs he was replaced by Lee, Gifford collecting 10 off the over with well-placed shots. Mason was not taking any risks, being content to let his partner do the scoring Stumps were drawn’ at 6.30 with the total at 51. Scores: — OLD BOYS. First Innings. TIMARU v. STAR Timaru and Star tried conclusions on the Anzac wicket, which was soft when play commenced, but improved later. Timaru batted first and compiled 190, due largely to good knocks by Allcott, McLauchlan and Wilson, who accounted for 135 of a total of 190, Allcott and Murchison opened to Seaton and Hahn. Allcott got the first delivery from Seaton away for four, and then notched a brace and a single, bringing Murchison to play the last ball of the over, which beat him. McLauchlan joined Allcott, and the pair settled down to steady scoring, the century being hoisted without the partnership being broken. Six runs later, however, McLauchlan was taken by Taylor off Hahn. Wilson joined Allcott, who reached 60 when he had the misfortune to hit his wicket. His innings had been a bright one, he having collected eight boundaries. Moore opened steadily, but after reaching eight he was taken by Allen off Taylor, who had been keeping a splendid length. Hudson did not get going, being caught by Allen off Taylor when he had made four. At this stage Taylor had taken three wickets for 39 runs in 17 overs. Berry was bowled by Owen after he had made a single, but Courtis opened more confidently. He had made seven when he gave Owen a catch off Seaton, McCarten went for the runs, hitting four braces off Seaton. He got two more singles, and then failed to play a straight one from Hahn, an appeal for lbw., being successful. Wilson gave a good display hitting up 38 before he turned one from Taylor on to his wickets. The innings closed for 190. Taylor was the most successful of the Star bowlers,, taking four wickets for 42 runs.

Star opened disastrously, losing Shillito before he had scored. Button and Allen then became associated, and they took the total to 29 when Allcott beat Button, who had made 12. Stumps were then drawn. Scores:—
