COUNCIL ENTERTAINED

END OF YEAR FUNCTION At the conclusion of the business of the Timaru Borough Council at its final meeting for 1934 last night, the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) entertained Councillors and the principal officers of the Council at supper, the function being attended also by Messrs A. E. Lawrence, editor of “The Timaru Herald,” D. McLennan, editor of “The Timaru Post,” L. E. Finch, representing the Borough solicitors (Messrs Perry, Finch and Hudson), and Police Inspector, L. E. O’Halloran. In proposing the toast of “The Municipality of Timaru,” the Deputy-Mayor, Cr. G. Benstead, referred to the great progress the town had made in recent years, and said that in all his travels from one end of New Zealand to the other, he had never seen a spot of which he was so much enamoured as “Timaru by the Sea.” He referred to the harmonious year of office of the Council, which, he claimed had achieved considerable success under the kindly leadership of the Mayor. He reviewed the Council’s year and mentioned that the Electrical Department had been a great success, although other people were casting somewhat covetous eyes in Timaru Borough’s direction. He hoped' that the progress of the town would continue, and that it would soon reach city status. “The Police Force” was the toast proposed by Cr. W. G. Tweedy, who referred to the creditable manner in which the custodians of the law in the Dominion, and in Timaru, particularly, carried out their work. The toast was acknowledged by Inspector O’Halloran. In proposing the toasts “The Council’s LegaL Advisers,” and “The Council’s Staff, Inside and Outside,” Crs. P. B. Foote and F. B. Hawkey, respectively, mentioned the good service that the Council had received from its legal advisers and all members of the staff. Mr Finch and the Town Clerk (Mr E. Killick) thanked the speakers and the Council for their expressions of confidence. Cr. P. C. Vinnell, in proposing the toast of “ The Press,” referred to the fine influence the newspapers could have in upholding any body striving to do its best for a town. He was sure that the local papers undoubtedly had the interests of the town at. heart. In reply, the functions of a newspaper were outlined by Mr Lawrence, who said that the local papers fully realised the importance of the work of the Timaru Borough Council, the Mayor and Councillors, and in fact, members of all local bodies in South Canterbury, being prompted by the highest motives in serving the community. He could say that the Council was the best team that had been in office for a number of years. Team work had been a feature of their administration and the result of that fine work spoke for itself. Mr Finch proposed the toast of > “The Mayor and Mayoress,” and paid a tribute to their work in the interests of the town during the year, the compliment being acknowledged by the Mayor.

The function concluded with “Auld Lang Syne.”
