GERALDINE

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING A meeting of the general committee of the Geraldine Unemployment Committee, held in the Borough Council Chambers, was attended by Messrs K. Mackenzie, B. R. Macdonald, J. R. Lack, E. H. Logan, G. H. Patrick, M. Campbell and L. S. R. King. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Mr Campbell, Mr Mackenzie was voted to the chair. Before commencing the business, Mr Mackenzie, who referred to the death of Mr John Kennedy, who had been chairman of the committee since its inception, asked members to stand as a mark of respect. The secretary (Mr F. E. Whiteley) was asked to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs Kennedy and family. Mr Mackenzie then vacated the chair, and the secretary called for nominations for the position of chairman. On the motion of Messrs Lack and Macdonald, Mr Mackenzie was elected chairman. The secretary reported that since the last meeting there had been no alteration in the amount of the Unemployment Board’s allocation. At present there were 134 men on the No. 5 Scheme and 11 on the No. 4a Scheme, making a total of 145. Last year there were 133 on the No. 5 Scheme and 37 on the 4a Scheme, a total of 170. Applications for boots continued, and 187 pairs had been issued. Mr Lack, who drew attention to the fact that there would be a vacancy on the committee, moved that the Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty be a member of the committee with a seat on the executive. The motion, which was seconded by Mr Bell, was carried. On the motion of Messrs Patrick and Bell it was decided that a letter be sent to the Geraldine Unemployed Workers’ Union in regard to vegetable growing at their homes, which the Unemployment Board had decreed a necessary qualification for relief. Mr Macdonald referred to a letter he had received appealing for assistance. It was decided that the certifying officer (Mr King) endeavour to arrange assistance if possible.
