PAREORA

At the November meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute, the president, Mrs H. Hoskins, presided over only a fair attendance. Mrs R. Davison was welcomed as a new member. Mrs Hoskins gave a report on the recent Federation meeting held at Temuka. The roll call was “The most interesting place I have been to,” and the principal speakers in the debate which followed were Mrs Wallace. Mrs Whitticase and Miss Jean Munro. The subject was “The pre-war girl is superior to the post-war girl.” A collection of articles from the Blind Institute and the Disabled Soldiers’ Association found a ready sale under Mrs T. Guthrie. The competition winners were: Bowl of flowers, Mrs Whitticase 1, Mrs F. Hanson 2; specimen bloom, Mrs Richards 1, Mrs Whitticase 2; meringues, Miss Jean Munro 1; Christmas gift costing not more than 1/-, Miss Sylvia Smallridge 1, Miss Jean Munro 2; Christmas gift costing not more than 6d, Miss Carrie Smallridge 1 and 2, Miss Jean Munro 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Emery and Rouse. A garden party was held at the residence of Mrs H. Hoskins, the proceeds being in aid of the folk dance teams that are competing at Temuka. During the afternoon the teams demonstrated the dances that are being practised for the competition. Competitions were won as follows during the afternoon: Tin of tea, Mrs A. Munro; knitting bag, Mrs R. Munro. On behalf of all present, Mrs Guthrie thanked Mr and Mrs Hoskins for the pleasant afternoon.
