WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
SHERWOOD DOWNS Mrs A. Mackenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute, and welcomed visitors from Fairlie and Mrs E. Williams and her little son. Prizewinners at the recent Timaru and Waimate shows were congratulated. Mrs F. Carter was thanked for the motto: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for anyone else.” (Dickens.) An invitation was received from the Mt. Nessing Institute to be present at its next meeting, when Miss Spencer would give an address. Mrs A. P. Bray and Miss C. Macdonald agreed to care for the plot at the monument. A discussion resulted in the hostess system for afternoon teas being retained. It was decided that a district picnic be held in December, toys to be provided as usual for the children. Mrs Carter’s offer to hold the picnic at Te Puni was accepted with thanks. Miss A. Scott received a vote of thanks for her interesting report of the recent Federation meeting at Temuka. Great interest was shown in the displays of Christmas novelties by Mrs West (Fairlie), Mrs A. Mackenzie and Mrs S. Harper. Votes of thanks was passed to the demonstrators. Mrs West and Mrs E. Williams judged the best bloom competition which resulted: Mrs Reid 1, Mrs Galwey 2, Mrs Anniss 3. A parade of frocks made by the wearers, the material costing not more than 5/-, was judged by Mrs Latimer, Fairlie. The placings were as follows: Miss Laird 1, Mrs West, Mrs Mackenzie, and Mrs Gibson equal 2.
