MARATHON SWIM

Marvin Nelson, of the United States, easily won the world Marathon swim over fifteen miles, which took place on Lake Ontario, Toronto, on September 3. Only five of ninety entrants finished. Nelson won a prize of £IOOO. Nelson, who won the race last year, covered the distance in 7hr. 46sec., being 27min. in front of the second man. Two hours after the start of the race fifty of the swimmers had given up owing to the intense coldness of the water, the temperature of which was 60deg. After crawling out or being dragged out, they were rushed off to bed with hot water bottles. Most of them were chilled to the bone and suffered from cramp. George Young, a former winner of the race, had to withdraw when leading at five miles.
