WHAT IS A DEAD HEAT?
It is interesting to learn from members of the London Rowing Club eight-oared crew now training on the Yarra that in regattas held in England any difference at the finish of a race under 3ft is regarded as a dead heat, as it is considered that the crew getting in the last stroke at the post would gain the difference by the run of the boat (reports the “Australasian”). In Victoria, rowing finishes are judged as long as a judge is able to give a decision, and very often verdicts are registered for a foot difference. On the Henley course from the memorial judge’s box to the post on the other side is a simple matter to pick out a difference of a foot.
