LONDON, October 31. The Berlin correspondent of “The Daily Telegraph” learns that Herr Hitler will no longer support State interference in the affairs of the Church. It appears that he has made it clear that his position is one of neutrality. Nobody would be surprised if Dr. Mueller, the Reichbishop, departs for a long holiday. NO LONGER INTERESTED HERR HITLER’S REPLY TO BISHOPS’ PROTESTS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 31, 8.55 p.m.) BERLIN, October 30. Herr Hitler told the bishops that he was not further interested in the dispute, which was for the Church to solve. Orders have already been issued to the Storm Troops and secret police to cease interfering in Church affairs, which they are told are no longer the concern of the State. Herr Hitler also received Bishop Meiser and Bishop Wurm in an audience which enabled them to emphasise the attitude of the churches. It is still uncertain whether the interview was a gesture of reconciliation or Herr Hitler’s final attempt to force a settlement, but the opposition gained a victory by the announcement that Dr. Jaeger had retired from all church offices.
“THAT CROWD MUST GO”
EDICT TO HERR HITLER United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright BERLIN, October 30.
Thirty Bavarian farmers, representing 200,000 Protestant peasants, forced their way into the Chancellery, saying that they were going to tell Herr Hitler what was really happening in the Evangelical Church.
The guard tried to turn them back, but they eventually saw Herr Hitler, and told him that Bishop Mueller and Dr Jaeger and "all that crowd,” must go, as they were ruining the Lutheran Church.
