BRITAIN DEFEATS AUSTRALIA HOME TEAM OVERWHELMED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received October 29, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 29. Britain defeated Australia in the first golf test by four matches to two. To-day’s foursomes resulted:—Hon. Michael Scott and Garnett defeated McKay and Ferrier, 7 and 5. Mac Lean and Bourn defeated Apperly and Ryan, 6 and 5. Scott and Garnett played faultless golf in the morning round to lead five up. Garnett’s length from the tees, supplemented by Scott’s excellent short game, made them an ideal combination. Whenever Garnett pushed his drives into the rough, Scott recovered brilliantly, and both purled well. The ninth hole of 460 yards was done in par 5, which is a good Indication of their play. Garnett drove about 270 yards and Scott’s approach finished Bft from the pin. Garnett sank a putt for an Eagle. The pair averaged fours when the match finished. Mac Lean again was in great form but his partner Bourn was all astray, slicing badly. The Britishers were two down at lunch, which was entirely duj to Bourn’s bad play. Apperly and Ryan played only a steady game. Bourn showed a reversal of form in the afternoon and with Mac Lean continuing good golf, the Britishers took six of the first eight holes, eventually winning easily. The Australians after lunch played very badly, being seldom on the fairway and frequently taking three putts.
