A POPULAR RUGBY OFFICIAL

TWO PRESENTATIONS Before his departure from Fairlie Mr J. S. Roberts was met by the members of the Aorangi Football Club for the purpose of a farewell" evening and presentation.

[ After supper Mr H. Wall, president, expressed regret at Mr Roberts's departure and referred to the great amount of work he had done for the club, particularly as coach. Mr Roberts had been a very keen worker and his place would be very hard to fill. Mr Wall congratulated Mr Roberts on his promotion and wished him success in the future.

Mr W. B. Trotter (captain) and several other members, also spoke, endorsing the remarks of the president. Mr Wall then made the presentation of a bronze kerb.

Mr W. Robertson. captain of the Pirates Club, wished Mr Roberts success.

Mr F. Geaney. president of the SubUnion, thanked Mr Roberts for the work he had done as a member of the Union and conveyed the best wishes of the Union to Mr Roberts and family. Mr Geaney also spoke of Mr Roberts’s work as a referee during his stay in Farlie and asked Mr J. Wyber, vice-president, to make a presentation of a bronze fire screen on behalf of the Referees’ Association. Mr Wyber referred to Mr Roberts’s capabilities as a referee, and thanked him for his work in the Referees’ Association and for his interest during his present term as president. Mr Roberts was greeted with musical honours. He expressed thanks for the kind remarks and for the very fine presents. He had enjoyed his association with the Aorangi Club and his work in connection with football in the district, and wished all success in the future. ALLANDALE INSTITUTE At the monthly meeting of the Allandale Women’s Institute there was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mrs R. Wareing. Visitors were welcomed from the Fairlie and Sherwood Downs Institutes. Miss G. Hall was eifrolled as a new member.

The arrangements made for the birthday party and dance were announced.

Potatoes from Mr D. O’Reilly were distributed for the potato growing competition.

During the afternoon Miss Brice sang two songs. Mrs Mackenzie gave a talk on “Institute Work,” Mrs Carter a demonstration of making candied orange and lemon peel, and Mrs Ross, a demonstration of curing sheepskins for mats. Each was accorded a vote of thanks.

Mrs Searle judged the competition for the best arranged lib. jar of bulb blooms which was won by Mrs R. Ellis who also won the champion bloom prize. In the best scone competition Mrs J. Hall was first and Mrs J. O’Connor and Mrs T. Crampton equal second. Mrs Mackenzie was the winner in a “motor guessing” game. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames J. and T. Darling, R. Ellis and Miss Peggy Ellis. DEBATING CLUB There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of Fairlie Debating Club. Mr K. Campbell presided. The subject of the debate was “That the policy of Economic Nationalism should be abandoned.” The speakers for the affirmative were Messrs D. Barnes (leader), C. J. Talbot and S. P. Bray, and for the negative Messrs S. A. Cooper (leader), A. Mackintosh and P. E. Neilson. A very high standard was maintained throughout the debate, both teams acquitting themselves very well. Ttys decision was a draw on the vote of members.
