MISLEADING LEAFLET
MERCHANT FINED £5
By Telegraph - Press Association WELLINGTON, October 26
The publication by James Edward Williams, merchant, of a misleading statement regarding the properties of Besta St. Bernard Oil, resulted in a fine of £5 by Mr F. W. Silwell, S.M. He pleaded guilty. The statement was contained in a leaflet, and, inter alia, claimed to be for alleviation and cure of tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases.
The action was taken by the Health Department under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. The Health Inspector, in evidence, said he took a sample, and it appeared to be mutton bird oil. Counsel for Williams said that Williams had taken over the concern from the previous manager, who had compiled the leaflet, but Williams would accept responsibility. Counsel submitted that the oil had achieved good results, and that the word “cure” was often loosely used.
