The unemployed had been engaged in removing shingle in Hayman Street, Dawson Street and on the foreshore. Dawson Street could not be extended until the quarry line was removed further seaward. Harbourmaster’s Report. The Harbourmaster, Captain H. C. Hayne, reported that since last Board meeting, 24,000 tons had been dredged from the channel. Seven days were lost with bad weather and coaling and a further three and a half procuring moorings silted up with a cement-like covering in the outer cut, brought in by the southerly storm. One of the Hin. chains was broken twice on the edge of the bottom silt lifting it out, and a length of it was still down there and would be until it was dredged out. This cut was now out far enough, being 250 feet past the line of red light beacons and down to a depth of 31 feet at low water. The cut of the eastern side of the channel was out 1750 feet from the green ?ight, dredged to a depth of 31 feet low water from an average of 23 feet, leaving 1000 feet of this cut yet to do. While dredging in this cut a big piece of timber was lifted. It fouled the bottom roller, and lost it on the bottom.
