CHURCH DAMAGED BY FIRE

ST. DAVID’S, SYDENHAM. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. Damage amounting to several hundreds of pounds was caused this morning by a fire in St. David's Presbyterian Church, Colombo Street, Sydenham. Prompt action by the Brigade confined the damage principally to the rear of the building, but the loss to the church was considerable, as two pianos were affected by the fire and water. A Communion set, presented at tne foundation of the church in 1850, was blackened by the flames. The records were charred, and the walls separating the kitchen from the vestry and rafters were destroyed. The church proper, though filled with smoke escaped damage. The cause is unknown, but it is believed that It started in the kitchen where supper had been prepared for a meeting last evening.
