THE POLICE GIRL
If you break the law in Pekin you may be arrested by a charming young woman (single), aged nineteen or thereabouts. She may have had personal experience of the conditions in the local gaol, for one of the qualifications for joining the police force is that recruits have not served a prison sentence of more than a year. “The Policewoman’s Review'” gives details of women police in China. Shanghai, it is stated, was the first city in China to employ women to carry out police duties. It had been found that a large number of women were engaged in the profitable business of illicit trade, so policewomen were appointed to deal w'ith them. In Nanking eight women w r ere trained and appointed to the police force in 1932, and later twenty-four were added. Pekin police force also appointed women in 1932. Their training and duties are similar to those of the Nanking force. They wear uniforms—and some of them carry arms!
