MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING

FIRE BRIGADE CLUB PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES The Timaru Fire Brigade Rifle Club concluded its season on Saturday evening when prizes were presented. A number of clubs were represented. Mr W. Duncan, president of 4 the Timaru Miniature Rifle Association, presided. After the King had been honoured, the toast of kindred clubs was proposed by Mr A. Hooke, captain of the Fire Brigade Club, who welcomed representatives of other clubs. Messrs I. A. Blackwood, of Timaru, L. McKeefry, of St. Patrick's, W. Brehaut, of Glen-iti.. and McNamara, of Fairview*. responded. The next toast, of patrons and vice-presidents, was proposed by Mr T. Thompson and responded to by Messrs Roberts and J. Christmas. The toast of the donors of prizes was proposed by Mr J. Moore and responded to by Messrs W. Best, W. Roberts and J. Murray. In presenting the Thomas Shield to the club captain. Mrs Thomas congratulated him on winning it again. The chairman, on behalf of the Fire Brigade Club, thanked Mrs Thomas for presenting the shield and assured her the men greatly appreciated her action. He hoped she would be spared to present it many more times. The chairman presented the club trophies as follow: —Club championship, Mr J. Moore; runner-up. Mr J. Murray; R. Brand medal. Mr K. Watkins; W. Roberts handicap. Messrs P. Sullivan and F. Sollis (equal); Segar button for weekly highest scores, Mr J. Moore; the bulls-eye competition, Mr J. Mcore; J. Murray handicap. R. Hall 1, H. Gledhtll 2. W Best 3; No. 1 handicap shoot. R. Hill 1, F. Sollis 2; No. 2 handicap shoot, R. Hill 1. A. Hooke and G. Hay 2 (equal). A special trophy was presented to Mr E. Fairbrother for his shooting during the year. Mr W. Roberts then proposed the toast of the prize-winners. Messrs Watkins. Hill. Sollis. Hall and Sullivan responding. Mr Murray propc :?d the toast of the entertainers, this being responded to by Messrs Budd, Morg: \ Connos. Firkin and Mayberry. Mr McKeffry proposed the toast of old shots. This was replied to by Messrs Jenson. McCann and Roberts. Mr J. Murray proposed the toast of the club champion. In replying. Mr J. Moore said he was pleased to win the championship again, especially as it was the Thomas Memorial Shield, as there was no man he had more respect for than the late Col. Thomas. Mr Moore said Mr and Mrs Thom p s were the best friends the Brigade ever had. It was just 25 years since the late Col. Thomas first presented him with the Port Guards championship belt, and he felt honoured that Mrs Thomas had presented him with the championship shield Mr Best proposed the toast of the Club coech. Mr J. Moore responding. Mr I. Blackwood proposed the toast of the Fire Brigade Rifle Club, which was repied to by the club captain. Mr A Hooke The chairmnn then proposed the toast of the South Canterbury champion. Mr W Best, who had won the championship in connection with the Hayhurst Shield, and was also first to put on the three possibles on the small bull in this ! competition. Mr Best had only started to shoot this year. Mr Best, ; in replying, said he did not shoot for individual trophies this year; he only ! did a little for his club in the form of team shooting. Mr Best then proposed the toast of the chairman, who suitably replied. During the evening the company was entertained with community singing led by Messrs Budd. Firkin and Morgan, and items by Messrs Budd, Griffiths. Mayberry and F Newmarch.
