PAPERS IN PRISON

KEEPING CONVICTS ABREAST OF EVENTS. LONDON, March 15. An experiment to keep prisoners abreast of outside events will shortly be started in Pakhurst Prison and Exeter Gaol. There will be provided a weekly newspaper of two typewritten foolscap sheets, summarising world news, and rigorously excluding crime reports. The newspaper will give prominence to football and cricket results. The idea was initiated by the Prison Commissioners, who consider the present method of the governor or chaplain reading the news to be unsatisfactory, as many prisoners are not able to assimilate it. Even men of good

memory cannot remember it. If the plan is successful it will be extended to other prisons.
