THEFT ALLEGED

TWO ST. ANDREWS MEN REMANDED. A charge of stealing, at St. Andrews, one hogget valued at 9/- from a person or persons unknown, was preferred against Thomas Rooney and Herbert Arthur Vivian at the Timaru Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker. S.M. The offence was alleged to have taken place on September 19th. In asking for a remand, Senior-Ser-geant Mathieson said that the police desired time in order to gather information. It was a serious offence, and there had been some complaints of sheep-stealing. Counsel for Rooney asked for bail, and no objection was raised. Accused were remanded until October 6th, bail being fixed at £IOO with two sureties of £SO each or one of £IOO, accused to report daily to the police at St. Andrews.
