THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. BRIDSON’S FIFTH TITLE. By Telegrapn—.tress Association WANGANUI, March 8. The national swimming championships were concluded at Gonville Baths on Saturday evening. The weather continued fine, and there was a capacity attendance. Gordon Bridson, of Auckland, was successful In retaining the men’s 440 yards title, thus equalling his effort of last year, when he won every senior freestyle event at Grey mouth. His times, however, were not nearly so good, but this is attributed to the slowness of the water. Results:— 440 YARDS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP.—G. Bridson (Auckland) 1, A. T. Stokes (Canterbury) 2, H. Go wan (Wanganui) 3. Also started.—D. Reid (South Canterbury). Won by ten yards; the same between second and third. Time, smin 42 3-ssec. 220 YARDS LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP.—Miss E. Champion (Auckland) 1, Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland) 2, Miss D. Anderson (Wanganui) 3. Also started—Miss S. Bracefleld (South Canterbury). Won by five yards; ten yards between second and third. Time, 3min 2 2-ssec. LADIES’ DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP —Miss J. Eggers (Otago) 1, Miss Foote (Canterbury) 2.
MEN’S DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP. —H. E. Walker (Otago) 1, W. Hassan (Auckland) 2, R. Thompson (Canterbury) 3.
220 YARDS LADIES’ BREASTSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP.—Miss G. Pidgeon (Auckland) 1, Miss E. Anderso» (Wanganui) 2, Miss J. Thomson (Auckland) 3. Only starters. Won by five yards; two yards between second and third. Time, 3min 44 4-ssec. 50 YARDS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE.—C. E. Claridge (Wellington) 1, C. Dalton (Canterbury) 2, J. Enwright (Auckland) 3. Also started —A. Raper (Auckland), J. Blakeley (Wellington), B. Haworth (Wanganui), L. Anderson (Taranaki). Won by a yard; a touch between second and third. Time, 27sec. FLYING SQUADRON, 500 yards.— Canterbury (Stokes, Moorehouse. Dalton, Rattray, Bolan) 1, Auckland 2. Won by a touch. Time, smin 19 l-ssec. WATER POLO.—Final: Canterbury 6, Auckland 4. NELSON SHIELD SAVING EVENT —Lyall Bay (Wellington) 1. Won by a narrow margin from the title-holders, Maranui (Wellington). Maranui B filled third place.
WILLIAM HENRY MEMORIAL SHlELD.—Maranui B 1, Opunake 2, Wanganui C 3. The Champion Beltman’s competition was won by L. Brown (New Plymouth), for the second year in succession.
