LONDON NAVAL TREATY.
America’s Early Gesture. BATTLESHIPS FOR JUNK HEAP. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 3. 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 2. The Navy Department announces that a tentative decision had been reached, calling for the retirement of the battleships Utah, Florida and Wyoming, about October 1, without the necessity of awaiting for Japan’s ratification of the London Treaty. It is assumed that world conditions are such that no situation could arise, within the next eighteen months in which the United States would be handicapped by lack of these warships, and the move will save the country about 4,000,000 dollars. It will also serve as a gesture of international confidence.
