FIRES.
BLOCK OF SHOPS CONSUMED. By TolegTaph—Press Association AUCKLAND, June 24. A fire, which occurred shortly after 6 o’clock this evening, destroyed a wooden block of shops right at the lower end of the main street, opposite the hotel. The block was a one-storeyed structure, and one of the oldest in the street. It comprised the following premises— Defence offices; Mac Gill motor workshop and Garage; J. F. Donelly’s music studio; Roberts’ fish shop; AV. Cook’s fi.sh shop; AA r . McEwen’s office; and AVilliams Bros.’ electrical workshop and showroom. The three last-named premises comprised the top portion of the block, owned by Me llwen, and the remainder was owned by Mac Gill. AA’illiams Brothers’ piano and sundries were saved, but Mac Gill’s plant and the contents of the other premiss were destroyed. The fire provided an hour's intense excitement. It started in Mac Gill’s garage. A car was being cranked by Mac Gill, when it backfired, and the rear portion burst into flames, which spread quickly. An unsuccessful attempt was made to push the car outside, but the ceiling caught fire and the flames then spread rapidly and the whole block was burned. It is understood that the building was insured for £950. The loss is very extensive.
