WESTPORT’S NEEDS.
PROGRESS LEAGUE MOVING. By Telegraph—Press Association WESTPORT, June '/A. The irritation felt in Westport over what is termed tl) 0 penny-wise-pound-foolish policy adopted in the matter of harbour equipment, was voiced vigorously at the Progress League’s meeting, and formed the subject of a telegram to the Minister for Marine, by the .Mayor, Mr Greenland. It called the attention of the Minister to the breakdown of the patcliedup coal loading crane on the wliarl. It was generally predicted at the time when the alterations were contemplated that the crane would he a failure, and representations were made to the Minister to purchase an up-to-date electrically driven crane. The break-down has interferred with coal loading operations at a time when the outlook for the coal trade at Westport looks brighter than it has been since pre-war days. _ • Something like alarm is also felt at the failure to take steps to prevent river encroachment above tlie Buller bridge, where the river threatens to break away in a new direction, converting the town of Westport into an island, and possibly rendering inoperative the Westport harbour, on which £11,000,000 has been spent.
