AUSTRALIA’S DELEGATE
By Electric Telegraph— Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable AasociatsaM. MELBOURNE, Oct. 7. Cabinet has decided that Mr CL F. Pearce shall represent Australia at the Washington Conference. APPOINTMENT ADVERSELY CRITICISED. Mr I-luglies’s announcement in the House of Representatives that Mr Pearce had been appointed the Australian delegate to the Washington Conference provoked considerable criticism by the Labour Party, Sii Robert Best, Mr W. A. Matt, and others, who contended that Mi Pearce’s qualifications were not high enough. The “Telegraph” correspondent suggests that the Government selected Mr Pearce in the hope that he would be acceptable to New Zealand as a delegate from Australasia.

The newspaper “Yorodzu Chobo” quotes the Premier (Mr Hara) as saying that the Japanese delegates at the Washington Conference will design to obtain a perfect agreement among the Powers, based on fundamental principles with respect to a world open door, the removal of racial barriers, and assurances for the existence of mankind. CHINA’S HUNDRED. SHANGHAI, Oct. 6. China’s delegation to the Washington Conference has sailed. The party numbered 100. AUSTRALIA RETRENCHING. DESTROYERS PAID OFF. MELBOURNE, Oct. 7. Three destroyers, the Tasmania, Tattoo, aud Success, have been paid off in accordance with the scheme of defence retrenchment. It is stated that the fleet has now been reduced beyond the safety margin, ANOTHER PROBLEM. WASHINGTON, Oct. 6. Senator Colt, in a speech in the Senate, said all efforts to maintain world peace would he undermined by the passage of Mr Borah’s Bill giving American coastwise ships free passage through the Panama Canal, and the Anglo-American Treaty would be violated. He urged arbitration. Received 9.30 p.m., October 7. BRISBANE, October 7. The House of Representatives, on the motion of Mr Hughes, endorsed the selection of Mr Pearce to attend the Washington Conference by 36 to 16.
