i A novel and instructive display of cooking was given to the residents of Pleasant Point, on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, when Mrs Pugh and Mr Partridge, representing the Standard Oil Company, gave demonstrations in the premises of Mr J. L. Thomas, who has been appointed district agent, for the "New Perfection" oil stoves. Notwithstanding that harvesting is in full swing, a goodly, number of ladies availed themselves of the opportunity and attended on both days. 'A few of the sterner sex also put in an appearance l . One and all are perfectly agreed that the stoves

arc a thorough success and a boon to the ladies. A number of sales were made and future orders promised. Afternoon tea was liberally supplied, from dainties cooked in the stoves.

Some people say that after the holidays comes a calm, but that is not always correct, because it is then the busy liouscnvifo turns to jam making. Early January sees the fruit cheap 'enough to warrant supplies being bought for Jam and Jelly. Then there are jars to be bought, sugar to be' ordered, perhaps even a new pan to be selected. A notice of much interest to housewives appears in this issue from Mr G. T. Dawson, announcing full supplies of all preserving jars and other requisites at tho most moderate prices....

On page 2 of this issue will be. found tho announcement of the closing of Darby's Great Bankrupt Stock Sale, the final two days being-to-day ana to-morrow. In order to effect & complete clearance of the balance of the unsold sfock a veritable slaughter will take place, and the goods will be cleared out at the best price offering. Seeing that the stock was purchased in the first instanoe at 8s 3d in the pound, the management are prepared to take even less than that &o long as the goods are cleared. The public will be well advised to have a look in to-day or to-morrow, as there are sure to be some lines that they require, and as price is no consideration this seems to be a chance of a life-time. Only two days remain to 6ecure the bargains. The address is, nest to Marriott's, Stafford Street. Carriage and freight make away with value of goods, to save this charge, absolutely nothing will leave Timaru of the present stock...
