In connection with the Merchant Service Guild claims, the secretary to tliu Guild stated that since giving evidence the late chief officer of the steamer Time had had his rating reduced and he lost his ship. The President of the Arbitration Court said he could not take evidence on such matters. The secretary of the Steamship Owners' Association declared that he was willing that such evidence should be taken, as he had a thorough explanation of the case. He also said the Association would favour increments to masters, but not to officers because they had not the same responsibility as masters. THE COST OF LIVING. The chief officer of the steamer Georgic, giving evidence regarding the difference in the cost of living in. Australia and in England, said that as a general thing a pound will go as far in England as thirty shillings in Ausrtalm. For a suit of underclothing costing 9s in England, he WGuld probably pay 16s in New Zealand.
