POLICE COMMISSION.
SITTING AT WESTPORT. Per Press Association. WESTPORT, August. 5. The Police Commission sat this evening. ' "•'. ■; '•'". Evidence- was given by Leonard Cockery, licensee of the Royal Hotel, but formerly a policeman that he'was'in. the service from 1898 to 1907, leaving with a good character, but because lie was riot'on for ten years he-got ho refund from the provident fund, whereas a constable dismissed from the service would be entitled to a refund ofjjpbntrihntiohs. Witness also stated that constables should be better paid and receive an additional uniform, a better house and travelling allowances and on leaving the service be i given his merit list for use if need be as a character in the event of applying, for a. position elsewhere. ~
Constable Reid. on behalf of the police of tho district, brought several complaints before the commission, principally against • allege 3' unfair promotions. He had no complaints: Sergeant Dew also gave evidence, t.iif. burden of his complaint being that chief detectives were given preference, over; uniformed sergeants' for i subinspectorates, witness considering that detective 5 : should rank in a different bi-i'ich of the service.-
