FAIRLIE NOTES.
(From our own Correspondent.) -. Fairlie is still enjoying very fine winter weather. Some sharp frosts have made ploughing difficult on hack facings, but otherwise the weather is very favourable for farmers. On the Mackenzie Plains some snow has fallen, the country along the western , coming in for the greatest share. However, there is not sufficient to cause loss among stock. A drifting fog prevailed for several days," and froze as it fell. Some of the wire fences resembled, in consequence, blocks of solid ice. Although Fairlie has more degrees of frost than are experienced nearer the coast, the air is calmer and drier, and the inhabitants prefer tin's sample of frost to that of down country. " The epidemic of measles in the Fairlie' district shows no signs of abating. Uoth old and young are befng tacked, and fr \=li cases are of dally o<-enrrence. Tho •■omplaint is seVererthan it was when it first reached Fairlie, and <ome of the latest oases have Jx en rather serious. The school was shut for three weeks, and should have been reopened n<\\r Tuesday. Acting on the advice of Dr. S. J. Cook, the county health officer, it has been decided to keep the school closed for an additional fortnight, making five" weeks in all. If the health of the-children permit, it is intended to reopen the school on Tuesday. August 3rd. A young man. Mr Southby, in the rniplov of Messrs Phillips and Sutherland, butchers, Fairly, met with a pninful accident at the end of Inst week. He was assisting to kill a bullock. when the animal kicked and smashed Mr Southby's right little finger against a post. The bone was badly splintered, and the flesh considerably torn. The sufferer was attended to by Dr. Cook, who at one time thought that amputation would be necessary. It is now hoped that the operation will not be needed.
