TEMUKA NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) An appeal is being made at Temuka on behalf of the family of Mr J. Bill, formerly of this district, who lost his Wife in'the recent fatal fire at Elthnni. Subscriptions are being received at -the office of the Mayor, and up to date a sum of £l7 6s lias been subscribed. _ The reconstructed Temuka Municipal Brass Band, under Bandmaster D. Bryan, rendered a programme of popular music on Saturday night In King street, and their effort was much annreciated. A special meeting of the Salvation Army, held on Monday in the barracks, iii connection with social work, was not well attended. The Mayor presided, and opened the proceedings with a short address in support of the social work being done by the Army. Staff Sergeant Hamilton submitted the annual statement, showing the nature of the relief afforded, and quoting figures in support. Mr Lashlie also gave a short address touching on tho liquor traffic. A motion of thanks, moved by Mr Douglas, was carried by acclamation. and the proceedings terminated with the singing of the Doxologv. Tho Temuka Poultry, Pigeon and Bog Society will hold its inaugural meeting to-morrow afternoon, the show opening at 2 p.m. Tiie Temuka Jioxing Association has fixed the <iat- of its competition for August 26th, in tho Drill Shed. Ail excellent programme is being submitted.
