TRAVELLING EXPENSES.

HEAVY YEARLY BILL. Per Press Association. NELSON, Juno 29. The Education Board had under consideration to-day a letter from the Under-Secretary, stating that in view of the amount paid in travelling allowances to members, the Department would not bo justified in favourably considering any applications for special grants. A return showed that for the year ended December 31st, 1908, £4OO had b**en paid to members in this way, the allowance to one West Coast member being £ll6 10s 6d, and to another £9S 17s. The chairman (Mr A. T. Maginnity) said that in comparison with the amounts drawn by other Boards, the allowances were absurdly large, but as payment of members they were small. He thought that a reduction could bo made. He thought that the payment of 6d a mile one way and 10s for the second day of meeting would cover out of pocket expenses. Tin's would reduce the total to £l9 6s 6d per meeting. Notice of motion was given for next meeting, fixing the travelling allowance at actual out of pocket expenses..
