TRAIN HITS A ROCK.
BADLY DAMAGED STOCK
PASSENGERS FRIGHTENED

PALMERSTON N., June 29
Just as the 5.10 train, Palmcrston to Woodville, was leaving the last cutting in the Manawatu Gorge last night, the engine crashed into a huge boulder which was < n the track. The engine and four trucks left the line. They were badly damaged, and great difficulty was experienced in getting them to Woodville this morn-
A special train was sent, to the scene of the mishap without delay, and a •?ang of men worked all night to clear the track.
Some of the passengers returned to J'almerston, whilst others went on to 'iVoodville. During the journey from the scene of the accident to Woodvillc the trucks again 'eft the line, owing to their disabled :-ondition. Several of the passengers were greatly frightened at the sudden stoppage of the train, and it is reported that one man was stunned by i.he fall of a. package from the rack when the engine hit the rock. ■
