Per Press Association. AYHANGREI, May 27. Wm. AYebster, Jack Edmons. and Duncan McKenzie were charged at the Magistrate's Court selling liquor without a license at the Parako_ Maori races. Each accused was fined £5, with heavy costs. WELLINGTON, May 27. A new trial is to be applied for in Christchurch in the libel case, T. A\. Stringer, K.C., v. John Norton, proprietor and conductor of New Zealand "Truth." The ground for the application is that the damages given hv the jury were excessive. CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. In the libel case Curlett v. "Lytteltori Times" Company, in which one farthing damages was awarded, the Judge granted costs on the lowest i-cale against the "Times'' Company this morning. DUNE DIN, _ May 27. At a meeting of the Taieri Licensing Committee it was decided not to issue any conditional licenses for the present. This means that next week s Winter Race Meeting at Wingatui will be held without the sale of liquor. The Union Company are advised that their training ship Dartford arrived at East London, South Africa, yesterdaj, all well. . It is understood that there is a possibility- of an interesting development in regard to the recent local option poll in Bruce, and that acting on legal advice the publicans will proceed to lodge applications for a renewal ol licenses in the usual way.
