OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN MORSE. Per Press Association. ■AUCKLAND, April 29. News has been! received from San Francisco of the death of Captain H. G. Morse formerly of the s.s.. Alameda; aged 75 years.-. v - HON. W. M. BOLT. DUNEDIN, April 29. The Hon. W. M. Bolt dropped dead to-day oil his way back front Waipori after tihe ceremony of , turning 6n ; the electric power ; for Dunedin City. • ; ■ ' Mr Bolt's death occurred about 4.4b <p.m., the party being about three miles from the. power house .ate Waipori. A long hill was. encountered soon after the journey was commenced, and deceased along with others walked up the steepest pinches, in order to case the load on the horses as much as possible. He evidently over-exerted himself, however, as after he had walked about a quarter of a mile he collapsed. On getting into the trap he seemed to revive, but as. 'soon as a stai'fc was made he fell back. dead. Mr Bolt had responded to the toast of Parliament at the luncheon earlier in the .day, and was then apparently in the best of health and spirits. . ■ 1 The 'Hon. W. M. Bolt, M.L.C., was born-in 1838 at Lerwick,. Shetland Isles. During his early -years' he assisted his , father/ the , village blacksmith, 'in the smithy, in managing a small farm, and in fishing.. In 1855,., when seventeen years of age he went to Liverpool, and shipped on a ship carrying troops' .to the Crimea, and subsequently sailed, in' various mercantile vessels, till he came to New Zealand in 1863. Mr Bolt .settled; in Dunedin. and was employed as a storeman by Messrs Bing, Harris. and Co., for nearly 30 ■■ Years, when he was called to the Legislative Council by the Ballance Gov- . ernment. Shortly after his arrival m ,tlie» colony, lie allied himself with the: Demor crati" ParKy in politics, and lie took 'an active part in. the Freetlioiight movement. He became chairman of the City school commit lee. and vice-president of the Trades Council. In.lßßo he propounded a scheme of. co-operative, settlement and lectured about it .in various JKirts.-.Pt the colony; and as a member of legislative* . Council he proposed a. seriesof resolutions tearing on the subject. ideal of advancement, of the people _^ as VJ general industrial co-operation. _ Mr Bold leaves five sons and three, daughters. One son is a farmer at Albury; another .is Acting-Postmaster at Bluff; a third (nowat Home) is manager of the Peninsula and Taieri. Dairy Company. MR. JOHN MORTON. The death is announced of Mr John Morton, of Eltham, which ocurred on Sunday morning, at the ago of 71. Deceased was born at County Wicklow in 1836 and a? a voung man joined the Dublin police- force. At the time of the Victorian gold rush he came out to that colony, and later on came over to Otago where he joined tho New Zealand police force. He Was at different thrieK tationed at Naseby, St. Bathans, Arrowtown, and Queens town. Thence lie was transferred, to, and had charge of, tlie Temuka station for a number of years, up till the time of his retirement from the service. Temuka will remember him as a capable officer and a kind friend to many who will feel much sympathy with those whom he has. predeceased. Oh leaving Temuka the lata Mr Morton took to farming pursuits in the Taranaki district, but he had of late been in very indifferent health which culminated in his death on Sunday morning. He leaves a widow and grown up family of three sons and two daughters. One of the sons joined the telegraph service at Temuka, and is now stationed at New Plymouth, and his two brothers are at Awatuna on the deceased gentleman's farms. The youngest son, . George, went to South Africa as a troopeij in the Ninth Contingent.
