OAMARTJ, April 29. i Sums time ago the police made a raid on the houses- of several Chinese marketgardeners and the casts came before .the Stipendiary Magis rata to-day. Charlie Govt who pleaded guilty to opium-smoking was fexei JJIQ and costs, there having been a.'previous conviction. Hop Lee pleaded not guilty to opiumsmoking and also pleaded not guilty to permitting- in his house. The first- charge was dismissed and on the second Hop Lee was fined £5 and costs. Ah Hong pleaded guilty to opium-smok-ing and was fined £5 and costs. Sing Quone pleaded guilty to a charge of opium-smoking, and was fined £5 and costs. The >ame defendant- was then charged with having opium in his possession, to which he pleaded not guilty, and the charge was -withdrawn. Hong - Goon, en a charge of having opium in his possession, suitable for smoking, •vras fihed £5 and costs.

The fines and costs totalled £4O 3s.
