MATERNITY HOMES.

DUXEDIN, May 17. _ Litigation is threatened over the mater.nity home for indigent mothers. Two county councils having taken the advice of soliciotrs, have given notice that they wQI not pay any money for the home. The Charitable Aid Board consulted its solicitors, whose opinion was to the effect that it was extremely doubtful if the Board could build an "entirely new building and rise it as a maternity home, but as the female refuge building is included in the existing institutions set out, money
may be expended on it. They think that the second part of section 30 covers expenditure for maintenance. Dr Batchelor said that in view of the Premier's remarks to the Wellington deputation* recently, if there was a. flaw in the Act, it would be speedily remedied. It was then mentioned that there was a hitch in connection *with the building:. It was found that the present building was affected by a "borer," and it was thought it would be a mistake to spend £SOO on it. If additions were made in brick, the cost would be" £IOOO. The .suggestion was made that an attempt should he made to raise money on winch, the subsidy would be paid. The question was referred back to the committee.
