DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA.
PROPOSALS OUTLINED
United Press Association—-Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, May 17. A cable message has been received by the Minister of Defence from Colonel Bridges, who went to England to fnrnish infoftnation to the Colonial Defence Committee, concerning the proposals to beima'de for the defence of Australia. The message gives some particulars of what the committee recommend. The committee,- it is understood, considers that it sary to spend 'several •hundred thousond pounds on new guns and fortifications before the coastal defences can be put.in a satisfactory condition, though it seems, to be understood that the expenditure can be spread over some years. A large number of new guns of heavier calibre than many in use are necessary, and the fortifications should be considerably strengthened in the near future. Hobart, Fremantle, Newcastle and Adelaide are mentioned in the last respect. Albany is not considered to be of any great valueas a fortified harbour, and its dismantling is recommended. *
