RUN DOWN BY TRAM.
A STRANGE AFFAIR.
TWO WOMEN INJURED.
COWARDLY MEN RUN AWAY.

WELLINGTON, May 17.
An electric tram running on the Kent Terrace track ran down a couple of women, who suddenly emerged from the reserve in that locality and stepped right between the rails.
• The weather was stormy at the time, and the night was very dark. On the motor-man examining ths women be found one of them conscious, and in a few minutes she recovered enough /to stand. "She seemed anxious to get away, but in answer to questions gave -a. name and address which were afterwards found to be false.
The other woman was found in a bad plight, and was removed to the hospital, suffering from a fractured skulL She remained in the institution all last night and to-day unidentified, but late this evening was identified by Alfred' Chynoweth as his wife, Catherine, aged 36 yeare. She is still unconscious, and is not likely to recover.
A broken bottle of whisky was found at the spot where the accident occurred. Two men who were with the women ram away.
