WANGANUI BEAT OTAGO.
Per Press Association. ~ DUNEDIN, Sept, 17. The first interprovincial match between Wanganui and Otago, was played on the Call (lonian ground to-day, in the. presence nf ah jut 4000 spectators." The ground was in "good order, but the ball was a trifle gre.isy owing to a light drizzling rain. The game, which was, on the whole, uninteresting, resulted in a win for Wangamri by 5 points (a goal from try) to four points (a potted goal). Wanganui had the heavier, forward team, and made the game tight, with the result that Otago did not get many opportunities. The visitors showed superior combination" among the forwards, while the defence of the whole team was remarkably good. backs did not attempt passing, but the fielding and kicking were all that could be desired. The Otago backs' passing was faulty, and Gilrojv the excellent University piayer, got ve"y few chances, the halves being considerably troubled by opposing wing forwards. Towards the end of the first spell, Guscott scored for Wanganui, Takarangi converting, and in the second half D( bson potted a beautiful goal for Otago. A. Downes was referee. WANGANUI V .SOUTH CANTERBURY. The following team has been chosen by the Selection Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, Mr F. B. RobiUiard (Ashburton), Mr W. J. Lewi3 (Winchester), and Mr J. P. Fitzgerald (Timaru), to represent South Canterbury in the match against Wanganui on Thursday:—W. E. Boys (Timaru), Dansey (Ashburton), Mundell (Timaru), Buchanan (Ashburton), Docherty (Star), O'Leary (Timaru), Opie J Winchester, Husband'(Star), Mara (TimaruJ, Fraser (Timaru), Budd (Star),. The team is said to be the strongest South Canterbury have put in the field this year, .and the game should be a good one. Wanganui, by defeating Canterbury, Southland, and Otago, have proved themselves to be one of the best teams in the colony, but as they play a similar game to South Canterbury the local men are confident of giving them a big go. The team will arrive bv the 8.20-p.m. train from Oamaru on the 21st, and .leave again for home by the express on Thursday. The forwards' chosen are to roll up for .practice at the High School gymnasium this evening. A coach has. been engaged to give them some schooling in scrum and line-out work. With a fine day on Thursday the public can count on a good afternoon's sport.
