FIRES.
MUIR'S BLOCK DESTROYED. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, September 18. A fire broke out in the. business centre at 11.15. on Saturday night r Mr A... L.. Muir's Poverty Bay Buildings, which includes two shops, Jbeing destroyed. The building contained fhe literary, publishing, jab'"printing 7 and [stationery departments of the " Herald," the shops being occupied S)ss Co.; (bicycle KusinessiO ahd Mr"G! "Burton (who was selling off his stpokT'of jewellery; etc.). The fire apparently broke'but in the bicycle shop, which Mr Roland left at 11 p.m., all then being apparently safe. Mr D. Canvpbell's restaurant adjoining was damaged to the extent of about £SO. In Miss Hyett's lancy-goods shop on the other side the stock was considerably damaged by water. The Masonic Hotel building near by was in danger for a brief period, but the Brigade managed to confine the flames to the one building. .The newspaper plant, being in a brick building at, the, rear; was not affected, and the paper con be- published •is usual. The insurances are^ —Mr Munv on " Herald " building £SOOO, and on stock £655; Mr Roland, £350 on stock; Mr Campbell, £IOO on stock; Mr Sheridan, £l5O on the restaurant building. Mr Muir's loss is estimated at more than £2OO above the'insurance.
INVERCARGILL, September 17. The insurances on the machinery in Mr Lambeth's woodware factory, destroyed by fire on Friday, were £550. in the New Zealand office, and on the stock £80; on the building, in the London and Liverpool and Globe office, £2OO.
