(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, January 9. Hone Heke, m his address to the Natives at Orakei, condemned the Native policy of the Government, especially the provision giving the Crown the exclusive right to purchase Native lands. He received a vote of confidence. The annual meetingof the New Zealand Insurance Company was held this afternoon. Dr J. L. Campbell presided and moved the adoption of the report as already telegraphed, declaring a dividend of 12i per cent, and a bonus of 6d per share. The adoption of the report was earned unanimously. Messrs T. Buddie, R. Rose, and Jas. Russell, the retiring directors, were re-elected. j The Arawa contingent arrived by special train this evening from Rotorua, 200 strong. The train was decorated with bannerets with the name of the hapus and tribes. The natives danced a haka before leaving the carriages. The mayor welcomed them m the name of the citizens. A fourth is bil letted m lodging houses, the remainder is quartered m the Agricultural Hall, and provided with rough bedding . and rugs. Tomorrow the Mayor proposes to show the chiefs the sights of the city. The Cambridge Borough Council, owing to the complaint of a resident regarding annoyance from the Salvation Army, have directed the legal committee to frame a by-law. NAPIER, January 9. An inquest on Howard was held this morning. The evidence showed that deceased came from Sydney about nine months ago, The death of his wife seemed to prey on his mind, and he took to drink to drown his cares and financial trouble. Howard had said to friends that he hoped he would never, spend such another Christmas. Deceased was an American by birth. Verdict : Death by taking a dose of prussic acid. WELLINGTON. January 9. Captain Edwin advises that there are now very strong evidences of heavy gales from the northward m most parts of the country between midnight of the 10th and noon of the 12th inst. The Primitive Methodist General Conference began to-day. The Rev. W. Laycock was elected president, and Rev, Mr Lyou secretary. The president, m his address, mentioned that one of the questions to be decided would be the much debated one of Methodist union. Mr John Duthie, M.H.R., will shortly visit England, returning to the colony before the beginning of next session of Parliament. The directors of the Equitable Building and Investment Company, of Wellington, recommend the payment of a further dividend of 5 per cent., making 9 per cent, for the year. The profit and loss account for the year shows a credit balance of £4953. The Electric Light Company have now 8000 lamps running, besides which it is expected that several of the Government offices will shortly be added to the list.The Lending Board is expected to have to sit daily for a month or more after the valuers' reports come to hand. At a meeting of the Woollen Company's shareholders a motion was unanimously carried merely receiving the report of the special committee -with thanks. The following were elected directors : — MrW. Fitzherbert, the Hon. C. J. Johnston, Messrs Barber, Exley, Gibbs, A. "Warburton, and Zohrab. There were seven other candidates. Only three of the directors are members of the old board. CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. At the Police Court to-day J. M. Walker, licensee of the Zetland Arms Hotel, was charged with permitting drunkenness on his licensed premises. The case arose out of the inquest on the man Allison. The charge was dismissed. At the Police Court to-day James Nelson was fined £5 and Edward Forward £1 for laying totalisator odds at the meeting of the Canterbuiy Trotting Club. DUNEDIN, January 9. The Mayor of Dunedin was received as a good templar last night. The University convocation has apgointed Mr Milne chairman, vice Mr hilton resigned. It was decided to hold the next meeting at CHristchurch, the date to be fixed by the chairman. At the inquest on the body of John Stevenson, who died from injuries rereived by being run over by a railway wagon m shunting on the Port Chalmers wharf, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, aud expressed the opinion that the practice of employing wagons m the manner described m the evidence was highly dangerous.
