LABOUR ITEMS.
Per Electric Telegraph— Copyright. Per Press Association. Sydney, January 9. The Premier has received a letter from the manager, of the Hetton colliery, and another from the secretary of the Newcastle miners, m response to the communication he addressed to them last week. The manager has promised to call a special meeting of directors of the company, and the secretary has intimated that the Premier's suggestion for statu quo for two mouths meets with the approval of the miners. The Premier is sanguine thatth'e conference which is to take place to-day will lead to a settlement of the points m dispute. A gentleman interested m the Hetton CQlliery says that as the miners have conceded three important points m the dispute, it is almost certain that the quarrel
will be adjusted. The Premier's interference is not favourably regarded m all quarters. A statement comes from Newcastle that the opinion of those who know anything about the coal trade is that the matter should be settled at once, and the indications are that it will be so settled if the Premier and others keep their fingers out of the pie they have no right to pick at.
